Running Clubs in Chicago: A Local Guide

Chicago has 10 running clubs and group runs in our directory — enough that whatever you’re after, from an easy social jog to a marathon build-up, there’s a group for it here. The scene leans toward 3 social & fun-run crews, 2 beginner-friendly clubs, 2 track & speed groups and 1 trail groups.

Most of these crews meet somewhere social and easy to find — a running store, a brewery or taproom, a park, a track, or a coffee shop — and set off together at a set day and time each week. The great majority of community group runs in Chicago are free; you simply turn up. And if you’re worried about being too slow, don’t be: plenty of Chicago clubs run at all paces or “no-drop,” meaning nobody gets left behind.

New to group running in Chicago?

If you’ve never joined a club before, the worry is almost always the same — am I too slow? You’re not. Start with a beginner-friendly or no-drop club, message them first, and pick the slightly slower pace group on your first run. Our beginner’s guides cover the rest: how to find a club, joining as a beginner, and what to expect at your first group run.

What local runners say

Very friendly group, casual meet up every Tuesday and Saturday, run 3 to 4 miles at your own pace, with pace groups, then end the run at a pub on Clarke St. near Wrigley. It's free and theres $5 beers and half price wings at the end, what's not to like!

I've been a member of CARA on and off for several years. They offer some decent discounts on races and to various running stores and other businesses. You get a subscription to Runner's World with your membership.

I started my running journey at the beginning of this year (2024). Was recommended by a good friend. My first day running with Viento was very welcoming. No matter the age, pace, or goal, the captains and members of Viento are very supportive.
