Before your first group run
- How do I find a running club near me?
- Start with the map or the search box up top — type your city and you'll see every club we track nearby. 820 clubs have a pinned meeting spot on the map; many more community crews run only on Meetup, Facebook, or Strava, so those live in each city's list rather than as map pins. You can also browse by state, by city, or by the thing that matters most to you — free, beginner-friendly, no-drop, women's — and filter any list down to the exact kind of run you want. Browse clubs by state →
- Are running clubs free?
- Most community group runs are completely free — 137 clubs here are confirmed free to join, and the classic answer is to just show up at the meeting spot and run. National groups like parkrun and November Project are always free with no sign-up. Some clubs do charge a small annual membership (often for RRCA insurance, coaching, or club races), and coached training groups usually charge for the program — we label those so there are no surprises. Browse free running clubs →
- What if I'm too slow, or a total beginner?
- This is the number-one worry, and the answer is: there's a club for you. Look for "no-drop" clubs (10 here), where the group waits and regroups so nobody runs alone, and "all-paces-welcome" clubs that run in pace groups. Beginner-friendly clubs (169 here) expect first-timers and often mix in walking. The honest truth from every club we've talked to: they were all beginners once, and a new face at a group run is a good day, not a burden. Browse beginner-friendly clubs →
- Do I have to be a member to run with a club?
- Almost never for your first run. The vast majority of clubs let you turn up to a group run as a guest — no membership, no commitment — to see if it's a fit. Free networks like parkrun and November Project have no membership at all. Some established clubs offer optional paid membership for perks (race entries, singlets, socials, discounts at the local running store), but the weekly group run itself is usually open to everyone. Check the club's own page or message them before your first run to confirm the meeting spot and pace. Explore national running networks →
